Common questions about IB to US GPA

How is IB grade converted to US GPA?

Each IB subject grade (1 to 7) maps to a US letter grade and the corresponding GPA point. The unweighted scale caps at 4.0 across all subjects. Weighted variants add a bonus on HL subjects, typically 0.5 or 1.0, mirroring how US schools handle honors and AP courses.

Should I report unweighted or weighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA is the safer default when applying to US universities because admissions offices recalculate GPA on their own scale. Weighted GPA is useful for school-internal reporting where HL rigor is recognized.

Why does my US GPA estimate change when I include extra subjects?

GPA is an average. Adding more subjects pulls the result toward the average of those grades. The toggle keeps your six diploma subjects as the baseline and lets you decide whether seventh subjects count.

Are TOK and Extended Essay points included?

No. The US GPA estimate uses subject grades only. TOK and EE bonus points sit outside the GPA framework because US transcripts do not have a parallel core component.
