Common questions about IB to UCAS Tariff

How is the UCAS Tariff calculated from IB?

UCAS uses a component-based conversion. Each IB subject grade is converted using a separate HL or SL table, then any Theory of Knowledge grade and Extended Essay grade are added on top. The total IB score out of 45 is not converted directly.

Do all UK universities use UCAS Tariff?

No. Many UK universities make IB offers based on total IB points and HL grade requirements rather than tariff points. UCAS Tariff is a comparison tool used in some admissions contexts.

Why doesn't CAS contribute to UCAS Tariff?

CAS is required for the diploma award but UCAS does not assign tariff points to it. Only subject grades, Theory of Knowledge, and the Extended Essay generate tariff points.

How does HL compare to A-level by tariff?

HL grade 7 and A-level A* both equal 56 tariff points; HL grade 6 and A-level A both equal 48. This is a tariff-point comparison, not a full academic equivalence.
